World Environmental Day 2024: Addressing the Climate Crisis in Mindanao and Beyond

Advocates Joined #GenerationRestoration: Addressing the Climate Crisis in Mindanao and Beyond

In celebration of World Environmental Day, last 5th of June 2024, built upon the urgency highlighted by many environmental challenges, Mindanao Climate Justice (MCJ) through its Kinaiyahan program organized an online forum titled “Joining #GenerationRestoration: Addressing the Climate Crisis in Mindanao and Beyond”. Dr. Reggie Pamugas and Prof. Arnold P. Alamon led the discussions.

On mental health and climate change, Dr. Reggie highlighted that climate change such as changes in temperature or increases in water level and any other things impacts mental health, especially on children and adolescents. He also reminded us that anxiety induced by climate change should not be faced alone but should be systematic and collective.

On the Lumad and climate crisis, Prof. Alamon highlighted that all natural disasters and their consequences are social disasters. He also tackles how capitalism and imperialism are responsible for the climate crisis that the world is facing, mentioning that the world is in an endless perpetual cycle of production, which aims to have an infinite accumulation of profit regardless of its impact on nature.

Wrapping up, the online forum “Joining #GenerationRestoration: Addressing the Climate Crisis in Mindanao and Beyond” offered valuable insights into the complex interplay between climate change and societal issues. Dr. Reggie Pamugas emphasized the significant impact of climate change on mental health, particularly among children and adolescents, and highlighted the necessity of collective support to address these challenges. Prof. Arnold P. Alamon, on the other hand, explored the broader social dimensions of the climate crisis, pointing out how systemic issues like capitalism and imperialism contribute to environmental degradation and social injustice. The discussions underscored that tackling the climate crisis requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses both psychological and socio-economic factors.

As the world reflects on the significance of World Environmental Day, it becomes evident that a unified and comprehensive effort is crucial for creating a more resilient and equitable future for both Mindanao and beyond.
