On December 6, 2022, Kinaiyahan–Youth for Climate Justice in Mindanao (YCJM) partnered with Assumption College of Davao and Green Dreams of a Generation to uplift Lumad children through the ‘Namamasko Po!’ gift-giving initiative.
Driven by the desire to assist indigenous peoples (IPs) facing challenges brought about by climate change, development aggressions, and various forms of political and economic disenfranchisement, MCJ spearheaded the gift-giving activity with the objective of supporting Lumad children by addressing immediate needs such as food and educational resources.
The global crises following the COVID-19 pandemic has particularly affected IP communities, further exacerbating their position as being historically marginalized and lacking access to basic social services. Indigenous children often have to pause their education to address more immediate needs like food and shelter.
As part of the gift-giving event, Kinaiyahan–YCJM members traveled to Davao and facilitated a cultural program for the community. Through the generosity of donors, they were able to provide meals, notebooks, pencils, and storybooks for the Lumad children.
The activity aimed to alleviate some burdens caused by ongoing crises. Through collective efforts and collaboration, Kinaiyahan–YCJM and its partners demonstrated a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of Lumad children, highlighting compassion and solidarity in times of adversity.
